The Living Lab philosophy

In the Living Lab development projects begin with the user. This makes a tremendous difference compared to the traditional top-to-bottom model, in which product development is producer-centred Users and consumers have both the skills and the will to innovate, and the Living Lab takes advantage of this resource.

When the user is the subject rather than the object, user involvement is raised to the fifth level and the user becomes a participant. Living Labs do not just assume, listen to, observe and test users’ experiences. Instead, users are invited to participate in the development process.

Living Labs incubate ideas, in which innovations borne out of practice are given the chance to mature so they can be realised.
